How to multitrack record a Mackie DL32R
Last checked
Short answer. Plug the DL32R's USB B port into a computer or an iPad and it sends 32 channels at 48 kHz, with no driver on a Mac. By default USB 1-32 carry the 32 mic preamps, straight after the gain. With no computer, it records to a USB hard drive on its USB A port, from the Recording/Playback view in Mackie's Master Fader app. The two ports can't be used at the same time.
Quick start
- Pick one way to record: a computer or iPad on USB B, or a hard drive on USB A. Not both: a drive on USB A stops a computer recording. (Ways to record)
- Check the patch. In Master Fader, open I/O Patch and the USB tab. The default sends Mic Pre 1-32 to USB 1-32; add Main L/R if you want the mix too. (USB routing)
- Set the gain, then lock it on every other iPad with Access Limiting, so nobody else changes your recording levels (our advice). (Tap points)
- Open your recording app and check that it sees 32 channels at 48 kHz. (Recording settings)
- Record a 30 s test and play it back before the show.
- For a long show on an iPad, keep it charged with a powered USB hub or a camera adapter that passes power through (our advice). (Mac, iPad and iPhone)
This guide covers the DL32R, the rack mixer controlled from an iPad. The DL32S, DL16S and DL32SE are a different design and have no drive recorder; they are in the mixer recording guides, with every other mixer. The words used here are in its glossary. Facts come from Mackie's DL32R manual (2015), the DL32R spec sheet (2015) and Mackie's Master Fader 5 Reference Guide (2018) unless a line says otherwise. The sources are at the end.
Ways to record a DL32R
To a computer over USB
Plug the USB B port into the computer and record in any DAW.
- Channels: 32 in and 32 out: "32x32 channels of recording and playback to a connected computer over USB 2.0 by presenting the DL32R as an audio class 2.0 compliant device" (DL32R manual).
- Sample rate: 48 kHz only.
- Bit depth: 16 or 24-bit (DL32R manual). The recording app picks which (our reading; Mackie doesn't say).
- Driver: none on a Mac. On Windows, Mackie says "Driver installation required".
- Channel count: no mode or channel-count option is documented, so we expect 32 x 32 every time (our reading).
With no computer: to a USB hard drive
The DL32R records to a hard drive on its USB A port.
- Tracks: 1 to 32, chosen per recording (Master Fader 5 guide). See 24 or 32 tracks? below.
- Format: 16 or 24-bit at 48 kHz, as one multichannel (interleaved) WAV per take: "The DL32R records to multichannel .wav files that contain between one and 32 channels (or tracks) in a single file." Most DAWs split it into tracks on import; otherwise Mackie suggests Sound Devices Wave Agent.
- Long shows: each file stays under 2 GB. The DL32R starts a new one "without any data loss", so a long take is several WAV files; line them up end to end in the DAW. Mackie's example: a 50-minute, 24-channel recording gives 5 files.
- Drive: Mackie says use a "USB 2.0 or better spinning hard disk drive" and "Do not use a thumb drive" for recording (a thumb drive is fine for stereo playback). Dedicate the drive to the DL32R, format it in the DL32R, and don't use a USB hub. A bus-powered drive is fine "from 5V up to 1A". The manual's spec table says FAT32.
- Free space: recording won't start, and stops, below 100 MB free.
- Folders: the drive holds "Music" (stereo files to play) and "Recordings" (one folder per take).
Drive or computer, not both. The drive and a computer can't be used at the same time. Mackie: "USB A and USB B connectors may NOT be used simultaneously. If a hard drive is connected to USB A, it will take priority over anything connected to USB B." A drive plugged in during a computer recording interrupts it.
To an iPad, iPhone or Mac with an app
Mackie's manual names the iPad, with Apple's camera connection kit. The iPhone isn't named. A Mac works like any computer above, with no driver. See Mac, iPad and iPhone below.
DL32R recording settings
- Over USB B: 48 kHz only, 16 or 24-bit, set in your recording app (our reading). There is nothing to switch on the DL32R.
- To the drive: in Master Fader, tap the Recording/Playback button (upper right of the navigation bar), name the recording, pick how many tracks (1-32) and 16 or 24 bits, then tap Record. Name, track count and bit depth can't change while it records.
- The iPad can leave the app: drive recording carries on in the background (Master Fader 5 guide).
- Clock: Mackie documents no word clock. An optional Dante card is offered (spec sheet).
- File format on the drive: multichannel WAV, 48 kHz.
24 or 32 tracks on the drive?
Mackie's own documents contradict each other. The 2015 spec table, in the manual and on the spec sheet, says the drive records "1-24 channel, 48 kHz, 16/24-bit (multichannel .wav)". The manual's own text, the spec sheet's feature list and the 2018 Master Fader 5 guide say 32, and the guide's track menu goes "1-32". We read the 2018 guide as the current one: up to 32 tracks with current firmware and Master Fader, and an older unit may show 24 until it is updated (our reading). Mackie doesn't say which firmware first allowed 32, so update the mixer and the app before a show, and check the track menu.
Only some channels, or none? Check USB A and the track count
- The computer lost the DL32R? A drive on USB A takes priority over USB B. Unplug the drive, then unplug and replug USB B: the DL32R won't reappear until you do (DL32R manual).
- Fewer tracks on the drive than you wanted? The track count is set per recording, before you press Record. Check it, and see 24 or 32 tracks?.
- A channel is silent? Check its USB slot in I/O Patch > USB: a cleared slot sends nothing.
DL32R USB routing
Recording every input? There is nothing to change. The default sends Mic Pre 1-32 to USB 1-32 (Master Fader 5 guide).
Each USB slot takes any source: "Any combination of channels or outputs may be selected as the record source and playback destination." The same patch feeds the drive and the computer.
- In Master Fader, tap the I/O Patch button (upper right of the navigation bar).
- Open the USB tab. Rows are sources, columns are USB slots; tap a crosshair to patch.
- To start over, the tools button (upper left) offers Reset to Default or Clear for the open tab. Snapshots store the patch.
Sources on the USB tab: Oscillator, Mic Pre 1-32, USB 1-32, Dante 1-32, Channel 1-32 Post-DSP, Return 1-4 Post-DSP, FX L/R Post-DSP, Main L/R Pre-Fader, Main L/R, Subgroups 1-6, Aux 1-14, FX Send 1-3, Matrix 1-6 and Monitor L/R.
Recording the mix too. Mackie's example patches Mic Pre 1-12 to USB 1-12, Main L/R to USB 13-14 and Aux 1-2 to USB 15-16. With all 32 inputs in use there are no spare slots, so a stereo mix costs two input tracks.
DL32R playback for virtual soundcheck
Each channel has two sources: Input A (by default the mic pres) and Input B (by default the USB returns, from the drive or the computer). Switch the channels to Input B to hear the recording through the mix.
- Shortcuts: the Recording/Playback view has Channel A / B (all channels) and A Tracks / B Tracks (only as many channels as the loaded file has tracks).
- From the drive: it plays 48 kHz WAV files. 44.1 kHz, AAC, MP3 and AIFF won't play. Mackie notes that multichannel files made in some DAWs "will only play back properly with 27 or fewer tracks".
- From a computer: play 32 tracks out of the DAW to USB 1-32, and the channels on Input B hear them.
Because the default record tap is Mic Pre and the playback comes back at the channel's input, the trim, HPF, EQ and dynamics work on the playback as they did on the live input (our reading of the block diagram).
DL32R tap points
Which tap to record, and why, is in Pre or post fader. On the DL32R you pick the tap per USB slot, from the block diagram in the Master Fader 5 guide:
- Which to pick: for a recording you'll remix, Mic Pre, the default.
- Mic Pre: after the analog gain and the converter, before everything digital: before digital trim, polarity, HPF, gate, compressor, EQ, mute and fader. Mackie calls this "recording each input directly off the mic pre with no processing".
- Channel N Post-DSP (the "Ch Direct Out" on the block diagram): after the HPF, gate, compressor and EQ, before mute and fader. Use it for processed tracks (our advice).
- Main L/R: offered both pre-fader and post-fader.
- Gain vs trim: the preamp gain is analog, digitally controlled, in 3 dB steps: 0 to 60 dB on XLR, -20 to 40 dB on the 1/4" input (spec sheet). Line inputs 25-32 add a -20 dB pad on TRS. The digital trim comes after the Mic Pre tap (block diagram), so it doesn't change the recording.
- Meters: the channel meter sits right after the A/B source select, before the trim (block diagram). Mackie's FAQ: "Input meters are fixed Pre DSP."
- Several iPads: up to 20 iOS devices can control one DL32R (spec sheet). The gain is one setting per input, so a gain change from any of them changes the Mic Pre recording (our reading). Mackie doesn't say so. Access Limiting > Mic Preamps locks "48v, gain, trim and polarity" on a device. Lock it on every iPad except the one that owns gain (our advice).
DL32R on Mac, iPad and iPhone
- iPad: yes, per Mackie: "you may stream audio directly to and from an iPad using the iPad camera connection kit" (DL32R manual). The manual is from 2015 and names only that kit, so a USB-C iPad is not tested yet.
- iPhone: Mackie doesn't name the iPhone, and an iPhone with a DL32R is not tested yet.
- Mac: class compliant, no driver: "connecting it to a Mac should work automatically with no additional drivers" (DL32R manual). Mackie's 2015 list stops at OS X 10.11; current macOS is not listed by Mackie.
- Windows: Mackie says a driver installation is required.
- Power: Mackie doesn't say whether USB B charges an iPad. For a long show, use a powered USB hub or a camera adapter that passes power through (our advice), and test it before the show.
ShowRecorder (the app this site makes) records every USB Channel from any class-compliant mixer, one WAV file per channel. We haven't tested it with a DL32R yet. There is no Mixer Link for the DL32R: Mixer Link, which reads channel names and colors, works only on the XR18/MR18 and X32/M32.
Runs on a USB-C iPhone (iPhone 15 or later) on iOS 26, or a USB-C iPad on iPadOS 26. Mac: join the TestFlight beta.
